How to install Salesforce.com Connect for Office with MS Office 2010 (Excel only)

Well, it doesn't by default. The installer runs without error, but there'll be no Salesforce.com ribbon available. I don't know what went wrong, but you get nothing in Office14/xlstart directory. If you do the same thing with Office 2007, you'll get a SFDC.xla, and a SFDC12.xlam in the directory. I tried this on two separate Windows 7 instances, one virtual, one physical, both x64, with the same result. Office 2010 is x86. Connect for Office is 1.8.1.1.

Since the juice is all in the xla files, I decided to just copy the 2 files from a working Office 2007 machine to an Office 2010 VM. Files copied, open Excel 2010, and voila! Salesforce.com ribbon works as expected. I could log on, import reports, refresh them, all without issues.

The source machine for the files has Connect for Office 1.8.0.8.

BTW, it looks like Office13 is skipped. Why do people have to be that superstitious?

Update and disclaimer: here's a link I put up for downloading the 2 needed Office files.  These are SFDC Connect for Office files and the intellectual property belongs to no one but Salesforce.com.  The link should be up as long as they do not object to them being distributed this way.

  1. As I do not have an instance of 2007 available, can you please email these 2 files to me.

  2. Tried this, unfortunately it appears that the add-on does not play well with 64 bit office... Going to have to try another plan.

  4. If available - can someone email me the SFDC.xla and SFDC.xlam files? I do not have a backup from my old machine.

  6. i tried installing the toolkit with 2010, then found this. i removed 2010 and installed 2007 to try and acquire these files however the 2 files were not present when re-installing the toolkit over 2007. copying the 2 files from a 2007 installation on windows xp gave an error in 2010. could someone email me the files as well, or post a link to them uploaded, please? i think we'd all appreciate that.

  10. Not sure if I'm supposed to post the 2 files - it's part of the installation so it depends on the Data Loader's license, which I could find a clear one. I wouldn't assume it's GNU based, but since it does include a bunch of Apache Common type of licenses in the installation, it makes sense to guess it's something similar. So I'll find a way to post them, and try to respond to email requests - until I get a cease and desist. :)

  12. dqqplayer - Thanks for the upload! This has been killing me as I've been going back and forth between two computers because I didn't have this on my main machine. I can confirm this works on my Windows 7 (x86) Office 2010 installation.

And the dropbox link is wonderful. Thanks again!

  13. I just had to come back and say thanks again. This past week has been a breath of fresh air using the plugin after having my tech department upgrade my pc several months ago.

  15. @dggplayer ... is there something more I need to than just adding those 2 files to my XLSTART folder? I get an error when I add the files: "Compile Error in hidden Module: OTWrap"

I tried installing the Salesforce Office Toolkit, but only got a folder with a dll file in it. I'm running Window 7 x64 bit and Office 2010.

  17. @RebeccaR... were you trying to do Excel Connector or Connect for Office (also called Office Edition in the past)? They're two different things - both are useful for sure - and need different procedures. My info on this post is about doing Connect for Office with Office 2010.

  18. Worked great, THANK YOU! Would you be willing to toss in the sforce.dot and sforce12.dotm from 2007 for Word?

  19. @HeatherW... Sorry can't help you there. I don't have a 2007 installation I can access anymore. Since the Word portion for Salesforce wasn't important to me, I never dealt with the Word 2010 integration issue thus do not have the files.

  20. I used you zip and copied the files to Off14/XLstart and they worked just fine. Office 2010 64bit. Thank you.

  22. If you get the "Compile Error in hidden Module: OTWrap" error that Rebecca mentioned above, it is because there's more to the installation than simply copying the applicable files. You still must run the installer from Salesforce to load the balance of the installation into the salesforce.com folder under Program Files (or Program Files (x86) if on Windows 7 64-bit).

  23. What if I get the following error: "Compile error in hidden module: CommandHandler. This occurs when code is incompatible with the version, platform, or architecture of this application. Click "Help" for more information on hot to connect this error."

    1. @Blogger I think there are two things to check:
      1. Connect for Office does not work on x64 editions of Windows AFAIK, so you could see all kinds of compiler errors on that platform.
      2. Make sure you did go through the installation, i.e., running the installer from Salesforce to the end. Copying the 2 files alone won't get you a working installation.

  24. I installed as instructed, but only got it to work with excel. Both files downloaded are excel files. Am I missing something or is there a word file to put into XLStart? Thanks.

    1. Yes this is only about Excel. I've never tried to figure out if Word is also workable, as I don't use it personally... would be glad to hear anything you might be able to find out on that front!

  25. Hi,

I followed instructions above but when I try to log in through Excel I get 'an internal server error has occurred while processing your request url https://www.salesforce.com/services/Soap/c/2.5

Someone else reported same on success.salesforce.com 13 days ago:
    http://success.salesforce.com/questionDetail?qId=a1X30000000HZXuEAO

Anyone else getting same? Has SFDC blocked this?

    Thanks.

  26. Still works for me... the "internal server error" usually is transient.
